Supporting Acquisition of French at Home

A common question from parents is "How can I help my child learn French ?"

Here are some ideas :

Borrow books from the French room to read at home. Please check with Mme Jo so we can record which books you borrow. Come to the French room anytime.

Ask for recommendations of good music tapes. There are many very catchy tunes that are educational. Google Alain Le Lait for an example.

View the teaching series Muzzy with your child. The tapes in the French room are available to TGS families.

Introduce your child to people who speak French and get them to share stories from their French experience.

Point out French people, things, and places in the news and in the English language. Our two languages are incredibly intertwined, and share vocabulary for cooking, dance, music, and many other things.

Take a trip to Montreal, Québec, or any francophone country. Québec and Montreal are not very expensive to visit, and provide a culturally rich adventure for you and your family. Most people speak English in case you need a safety net. Your child's perspective of the language will change once he or she sees first hand that many people speak French.

Watch a French movie with your family. There are many good children's movies; ask for titles.

Check out links on line and sit and play games in French with your children. There are many that are fun, educational and free!
